Why study at West?
Our Learner Development courses are suitable for anyone who has had additional support for learning at school. Many students who apply for this course have already completed the Step 1 and 2 courses. If however you feel that you will only need one year on a supported course before progressing to mainstream or into employment then this is the course for you.
What will I learn?
This one year course is designed for young people who would benefit from additional support in order to help them make future progression into a mainstream course and/or employment. There is a particular emphasis on work experience in this course.
Course content may include:
- Career Management Skills and Work Related Skills
- Meta Skills
- Digital Literacies: including the skills required to access a remote curriculum
- Volunteering
- Marketing Skills
- Budgeting and Managing Money
- NHS Skills Academy: Greenock
- Vocational tasters: Clydebank, Paisley
The course also includes a work placement or simulated work experience.
What qualifications do I need?
You'll be invited for to attend a taster programme or interview and will be expected to clearly demonstrate an enthusiastic, positive attitude.
You should also be motivated, and a good team worker who wants to develop skills that will help entry to the workplace. Successful applicants will be able to travel independently.
To be offered a place on a course applicants should: demonstrate a willingness to participate in classroom activities; behave appropriately in a classroom setting, and; demonstrate an ability to communicate at the course level.

What can I do after?
After successfully completing this course you may have the skills needed to get work.
Or you could develop your skills further by studying another course, such as:

- A mainstream college course
