What will I learn?
Your Higher English Course can involve studying plays, poetry, short stories and novels. You will also write personal, discursive and critical essays. The course develops your listening and talking skills as well. It’s useful if you are aiming at additional qualifications - or higher grades; if you are seeking qualifications for entry to higher education programmes; planning a return to study or looking at a change of career; and even if you simply want to develop your interest in literature and language.
As the course is online, please be aware that you should have a reliable internet connection and a suitable device – for example a laptop with word processing software and capable of running MS Teams.
You should also be aware that the folio drafting session, prelim and – of course – the exam will be held on campus.
What qualifications do I need?
As a guideline, you would usually have an English National 5 pass, Standard Grade 1 or Intermediate 2 English at 'A' or 'B', an HN or degree qualification, however, you may have very competent English language skills whilst not possessing these minimum entry qualifications.
If you do, we would very much encourage you to apply and we may ask that you demonstrate to us your written language skills on the application. Acceptance onto the programme will be based on: evidence of entry qualifications, place availability and a short written personal statement on application.
What can I do after?
Students who are successful on this programme may be able to progress to: HNC/HND; university, or Postgraduate Courses such as Teaching Training
